Protaras is a predominantly tourist resort. It comes under the administrative jurisdiction of Paralimni Municipality. In ancient times, where now Protaras seems to be located stood the old city-state of Leukolla. The city possessed a small safe harbour where the Athenian Demetrius Poliorketes in the year 306 B.C sought refuge, lying in wait for Ptolemeos, one of the successors of Alexander the Great.

In the ensuing battle Ptolemeos was defeated and fled to Egypt, leaving Cyprus for a while in the hands of Demetrius. Protaras has lovely, sandy beaches with clear sky-blue waters and the most well known beach in the area is Fig Tree Bay. Protaras is also referred to as " the land of windmills" maintaining the nostalgic quality of the past.

On the back of success of Ayia Napa it has exploded into a resort of considerable size with tens of high capacity hotels, hotel apartments, villas, restaurants, pubs and all sort of facilities a modern holiday resort ought to have.Being quieter than Ayia Napa and having less of a club scene, it has a reputation of catering more for family and Cypriot tourism.

Most saint day festivals are celebrated on Church grounds.

Protaras Beaches

 Skoutari Beach

This beach comprises 50 m of hard-packed sand, rocks and cliffs falling apart. The bay is sheltered and there is an option of snorkeling here. In the area settle some good restaurants.

Agia Triada Beach

Used mainly as a boat launching area, in the shallow water of this diminutive beach you will find the sand which is a little coarse. The beach is not visited that widely as there is a lack of restaurants and cars are often parked along its 200 m curving length.

Mouzuora Beach

A small and popular with the Cypriots, the beach has 100 length narrow sand strip and some shade under the trees. Not much suitable for non-swimmers or children, as the sand decreases quite steeply. The parking facilities are good, and there is a large hotel and restaurants for holiday makers who choose to base here.

Louma Beach

The northern extension of Protaras, called Pernera is the busy centre. The 400 m curving strand of the beach is protected by an artificial bay. The beach has tree-shade, soft sand and clean water. Water sports are provided by Baywater Water Sports and the offer comprises banana tube rides, paragliding, water-skiing lessons, or ski jet. Sun loungers and umbrellas can be rented too.

Protaras Beach

Most popular and frequented of all the beaches of Protaras resort, it is a long and sandy beach studded with umbrellas and served by a variety of water sports. There are lots of nice spots along the beach that can be reached by access roads from the main Protaras high street inland.

Fig Tree Bay

This beach is the most popular within Protaras Beach . The British christened it "Fig Tree Bay" and the name was given after the single fig tree that stands guard back from the beach and is claimed to have been brought from the east in the 17 th century. The beach has fine-grained sand, the sea is clear and it is supplied with recreational facilities like water-skiing, paragliding and more. Many tourists, however, find it difficult to spot the beach itself, as it is not signed from the inland bypass road, lined by a chain of restaurants. Only the hotels are indicated. If you decide to spend your holiday here, remember that Salparo Hotel Apartments mark the north end of the bay, and the Nausicaa Beach Hotel Apartments the southern edge.

Green Bay Beach

To avoid the crowds, visit this beach. Although it is not signed clearly, the beach offers a neat swimming spot at the far southern end of the beach strip. It consists of the two parts. The north side provides the umbrellas and loungers to rent and in the southern part one can find some little sandstone platforms. Recommended is own picnic.
