Special Events that are held in Cyprus Print E-mail

The Afamia Grape Festival is held every October in Koiliani a village near Limassol. It is the after grape harvest and it’s an opportunity to relax and have fun after the hard work of harvesting.

There are wine tasting, crafts, painting exhibitions, markets and folk dancing.

 January usually in the first week the New Year Regatta organized by the Cyprus Yachting Association. February takes place the Limassol Carnival which is two weeks before the 50th day of the Greek Orthodox Lent period which is later in the year.

In March 7th Platform of Contemporary Dance is held in the Rialto Theatre in Limassol. April to June sees the European Dance Festival, 2008 will be the 11th year this has been held in Limassol. 16 countries participate in a two month extravaganza of contemporary dancing.

 Mid-May – Anthestiria ” Flower Festival a celebration of the coming of spring, the program includes flower exhibitions and parades and festivals are held in Larnaca, Limassol, and Paphos. June Windsurfing- RS:X European Championships an annual event organized by the Cyprus yachting Association.

 Shakespeare Festival organized by Cyprus Tourism Organization and the Cyprus Theatre Organization. Performances of ancient dramas and comedies are presented in Greek and are held in the ancient Theatre of Citrium, 19 km west of Limassol. 

July usually sees a series of cultural events organized by the Limassol Municipality. Festival of Ancient Greek Drama this is held for several weeks during July and August at the Ancient Odeon of Paphos and includes performances of tragedies and comedies by theatre companies from around the world. Some events are held at the Curium Theatre. The Lovely village of Pissouri hosts a week long of cultural festival which includes dance and theater performances, live music and other activities.

 August sees most of the village fiestas take place – there will almost certainly be one near where you are, these are good for getting to know locals and enjoy their annual celebrations.

 Limassol Wine Festival is usually on late August early September. This is a great event with free wine tasting, food and music and there are other events such as plays and concerts as part of the program Also in late August is the Paphos Aphrodite Festival with world famous opera performance in the open air in front of the Medieval Castle in Paphos.
